Public speaking is a powerful way to convey a message and is something I enjoy doing. The Ignite Talk assignment had a limit of twenty slides to be presented in 5 minutes which meant moving through each slide in approximately 15 seconds – requiring speed and concise language. The difficulty of this assignment was apparent to me when reading the instructions. I knew a rock-solid approach was needed to create the fun, engaging slideshow and script.

 

My strategy was to break down the project into four parts – define the topic and audience, develop an outline of the presentation, find graphics that were eye-catching and supported the information, and write the script for the audio portion of the presentation. Finding graphics and creating topic headings that caught the viewers eye was critical to the success of the project. There were many versions of graphics and revisions of captions and content for each slide.

 

I started the script development in the most boring way possible to get the skeleton of the message completed first and then layered the rhetorical techniques and tone of each sentence to make it conversational and engaging.​
