Editing for Maximum Readability

Reformatting a document layout to increase readability and synthesizing technical data into layman's terms  improves reader's engagement!

Skills:

MS Word, fonts, design, graphics, embedded links.

Reading and learning about nutrition and physical exercise can be boring when the document is long and technical with minimal graphics. The assignment challenged us to edit, reformat, and present technical information in a manner that a broad audience would find engaging and easy to read.

The most obvious issue with the article was that the paragraphs were not chunked into topics or sections. The lackluster sentence flow, dry wording, and a myriad of complex, compound sentences would bore and confuse any reader. After breaking the article into major themes, I chunked the paragraphs with large headings and used colorful fonts to capture the reader’s eye. The content for each section was revised with language that was engaging, active voice, and had bold, underlined text to catch the eye of the reader. Extraneous information was eliminated, and sentence structure and paragraphs were simplified for readability and content flow.

After multiple revisions and adding graphics, the final document delivered technical information that was engaging and easily scannable for any audience.
